ACUPRESSURE
BODYWORK THERAPY

Developed in China some 5,000 years ago, acupressure is the third branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Today, acupressure treatments are used both in hospitals and households throughout Asia. In China, for example, the technique is also used like first-aid: The Chinese typically practice it on themselves, or on family members to treat everyday ailments such as colds, headaches, sore muscles, and hangovers. Specialists are consulted for more complicated problems.

Acupressure bodywork therapy (ABT) is derived from a highly organized health maintenance system of bodywork that views the body as self-healing, self-regenerating and full of vitality. ABT involves applying pressure to certain points on the body to relieve pain, and treat or prevent a number of illnesses. It uses manipulative techniques developed by generation after generation of doctors, and is suitable for more severe, chronic conditions such as migraines, poor circulation, certain menstrual problems, immune system disorders, arthritis, chronic muscular-skeletal conditions, and pain from unresolved injuries or trauma.

Treatments are composed of a variety of forms using specialized pressure:
  • Tui-na (Chinese medical massage)
  • deep tissue massage w/ trigger point release
  • Reflexology
  • Cranio-Sacral Balancing w/ myofascial release
  • Thai Yoga Massage

         HOW IT WORKS:
In practice, ABT involves applying pressure, rubbing and/or massaging specific points on the body with the fingers, knuckles, and palms (and sometimes the elbows and feet). Every point has specific therapeutic effects on the related internal organs. By massaging these points, the corresponding external muscles also receive treatment. Acu-point massage promotes natural biological processes and stimulates the body's own natural self-healing ability, helping the body to correct itself.

Most people use acupressure bodywork treatments as a manual therapy remedy for specific health complaints or a preventative tool for health maintenance. It can be used to treat internal organ diseases, relieve pain, promote relaxation, or to support overall well-being and general good health.

ABT sessions are not intended as a full-body massage, but instead focus on 1-2 areas of the body depending on your specific condition or level of stress. Although sessions are more brief than standard bodywork treatments, ABT is intended to be repeated more frequently, and may offer superior results for certain conditions.

If you're treating an injury or acute condition, then the first two to four sessions should be a few days apart. For maintenance, receiving bodywork once a week or every few weeks may be appropriate.

         BENEFITS:
In ABT, relaxing muscles is only a secondary goal. It provides quick, safe and permanent to temporary relief for more than 50 common ailments. It has been proven an effective, safe, and speedy remedy at treating a wide variety of disorders including:
  • Muscular-skeletal problems: stiffness, aching or pain from unresolved injuries or trauma.
  • Chronic conditions: asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, impotence, insomnia, digestive complaints, poor circulation, arthritis, rheumatism, and certain menstrual problems.
  • Severe health issues: neuralgia, migraines, immune system disorders, etc.

Because ABT views the body as self-healing, it can provide clients with the insight to help correct a wide range of ailments. This understanding can help return the body-mind to a normal, healthy state where symptoms disappear naturally. Your greatest benefit from massage could be learning ways to release tension or help heal injuries. With acupressure massage comes a new approach to health & disease that is shared with every client through relaxation techniques, gentle exercises/stretches, dietary/lifestyle recommendations, and preventative self-care acupressure.

When performed in conjunction with acupuncture treatments, acupressure can greatly enhance the healing process for specific conditions involving pain and muscle tightness. Patients suffering from difficult mobility, chronic musculoskeletal aches, pain and stiffness including arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, paralysis, et cetera have had especially beneficial results with this treatment.
