CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE ![]() A safe, effective and drug-free way to become well and stay healthy, naturally! Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are complimentary therapeutic modalities that are often used together in the treatment of a variety of medical conditions. Although acupuncture was the first Oriental method of treatment to gain wide acceptance in the West, Oriental herbal medicine is quickly establishing itself as one of the most popular and effective alternative therapies in the West. Herbal medicine is actually the main treatment method within Oriental Medicine, accounting for more than 80% of treatments in Asia. Over its long history of some 5,000 years, Chinese herbology has evolved into an art form of its own. Its written history stretches back over 2,500 years, and some of the formulas used today are thousands of years old. Ancient herbal information was gathered, compiled, formulated, tested, and handed down from generation to generation. Today, practitioners of Chinese medicine continue to prescribe these same herbal formulas because they work extremely well. Qualified TCM practitioners who make use of Chinese herbs are generally familiar with more than 500 herbs in the pharmacopeias. The Chinese herbs prescribed for your condition may include vegetable, animal, and mineral ingredients, however, the majority of ingredients are from plant sources. Leaves, flowers, twigs, stems, roots, tubers, rhizomes, and bark are among the plant parts used. Vegetarians may always request animal-free herbal formulas. The herbs come in a variety of prepared forms, so that patients will not need to spend hours boiling and decocting of their herbs. The herbs may be in the form of tinctures, powders or pills, for example. Formulas are modified to suit each individual patient’s particular diagnosis. Thus, all formulas are personalized and customized depending on each patient’s entire health profile. All herbs prescribed are GMP certified to ensure quality, cleanliness, and proper preparation. In addition, western herbs and/or supplements are also prescribed on occasion, depending on the patient's particular condition. It must be remembered that although they are relatively safe with few side-effects, herbs are used for their pharmacological compounds just like prescription drugs. In fact, many drugs (such as aspirin) were originally derived from herbs. The herbal formulas we prescribe are balanced and combined to prevent side-effects or unwanted results. Patients are warned against self-medicating with generic over-the-counter herbs that may not suit them or that may cause unwanted side-effects over the long term. Herbal consultations, with or without acupuncture, are available by appointment.
