I-CHING READINGS

"Without a thorough understanding of the I-Ching, it is not possible to become a supreme doctor."
- Sun Si Miao, legendary 7th Century herbalist

Medical I-Ching Divination
I-Ching ("The Book of Changes") is an ancient Chinese system of insight and source of wisdom. According to most historians, the essential text of the I-Ching was developed before 1,000 B.C. by King Wan and the Duke of Chou. Although it is a product of ancient China, after thousands of years, many people still consult the I-Ching for guidance or advice or when seeking answers to important questions. The I-Ching is presented here to help anyone who needs its guiding wisdom.

Unlike other types of fortune-telling or prophecy, the I-Ching does not tell the future. It is used as a divinatory tool based on the concepts of synchronicity and resonance; in other words, it analyzes the present. The I-Ching is an ancient, authentic way of understanding universal patterns of change as they relate to human beings at a particular time and place. Likewise, Chinese medicine is based on the recognition of the patterns of change within one's patients.

Because the I-Ching and Chinese medicine are both based on yin-yang philosophy, it is especially appropriate to relate the two together. The medical applications of the I-Ching can be used to understand the anatomy of events, as well as for understanding a person's internal anatomy and the events therein.

By casting the I-Ching, the questioner accesses a deeper level of knowledge. The images and symbols of the trigrams and hexagrams can help one see situations from a different perspective or suggest the relevance of one piece of information over others. The I-Ching can help identify the initial causes of illness and help understand a patient's prognosis and progress. Rather than making forecasts, the I-Ching helps establish distinctions and associations to our wellbeing.

About the Readings
An oracle of the I-Ching is cast by flipping coins or more traditionally, by manipulating yarrow stalks. The oracle is one of 64 different hexagrams. The hexagram itself is composed of two trigrams, each consisting of three lines. Those lines are either straight (or Yang) or broken (Yin). In Chinese though, Yin and Yang are the two basic principles in life.

The appropriate hexagram and changing line are determined, and the I-Ching is used to stimulate the perception of the patterns of change and their implications and interpretations. The pattern presented is open to interpretation based on the particular set of circumstances at that particular time.

Medical I-Ching readings are available here. Readings on non-medical questions may also be posed. All questions are welcome. Here's how to request a reading:
  • Please approach the I-Ching with respect.
  • Meditate on your question. Be sincere. Hold the question in your mind, try to make your questions as specific as possible.
  • Rather than asking "yes or no" questions or questions beginning with "should," "is," or "will," the question in your request should begin with "what," "why," or "how." (For example, "what will happen?" rather than "will it happen?")
  • When you have clearly and unambiguously formulated your question, press "Consult the I-Ching" button below (please note that a new window will open in your browser, and you will be taken from this site).
