MEDITATION FOR HEALTH & WELL-BEING "Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes and the grass grows by itself.” Meditation both increases an awareness of the mind and calms it. In the most general sense, there are 3 basic types of meditation: 1) The practice of watching our thoughts until "pure awareness" dawns 2) The mantra recitation approach, which over time increases the vibratory frequency of the mind & body 3) Increasing the awareness of life-energy movement throughout the body Some kinds of meditation combine two or more approaches, while others try to remain more "pure". It may be argued that these methods all lead one in the same direction, toward the path of liberation from the confines of a mind dominated by worldly concerns. From this perspective, they are all essential, important and potent approaches, which are valuable at different stages of self-development. "WHAT ARE THE PROVEN MEDICAL BENEFITS OF MEDITATION?" Scientific research and studies conducted since the 1970s show that meditation beneficially affects medical diseases. Recently, a medical college in Georgia conducted a pilot study using meditation to help lower blood pressure in teens. The study was so successful that the project has been extended to five high schools and a middle school. Dozens of other studies have established that meditation can have medical applications for: “HOW IS THE MEDITATION TAUGHT?" Gardner Singleton will facilitate the practice of two methods of meditation, both done in group settings to amplify the healing benefits for all involved. 1. Mindfulness Meditation is taught in many stress reduction programs and meditation programs designed to help people deal with illness. 2. Qigong is also taught as a moving meditation; it is particularly suited to those athletic, energetic individuals who like physical activity.
