Qualified Acupuncture in Oklahoma

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including acupuncture, is a discreet and independent health care profession. It is not simply a technique that can easily be added to the array of techniques of some other health care profession. The study of Chinese medicine, acupuncture, and Chinese herbs is as rigorous as is the study of allopathic, chiropractic, naturopathic, or homeopathic medicine. Previous training in any one of these other systems does not automatically confer competence or knowledge in Chinese medicine. In order to get the full benefits and safety of Chinese medicine, one should seek out professionally trained and credentialed practitioners. ─ Bob Flaws, author editor and translator of over 80 books on Chinese medicine

HOW CAN YOU FIND
A QUALIFIED ACUPUNCTURIST IN OKLAHOMA?

First of all, it is necessary to know that no law exists which licenses, regulates, or prohibits acupuncture in the state of Oklahoma. In addition, there is no provision for the practice of auricular (ear) acupuncture by chemical dependency specialists. Unfortunately, what this means is that anyone, with any amount of training (or none at all!) may set up an acupuncture practice. However, at the national level (National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine or NCCAOM) there are certain educational requirements and a defined scope of practice to become an acupuncturist.

Secondly, check out the web site at AcuFinder.com for a list of qualified, skilled practitioners as determined by National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, or look in NCCAOM’s annual Directory of Diplomates which should be made available in all libraries.

M.D.'s and Chiropractors (D.C.’s) may be your only option in some areas. In such a case, please visit them with the understanding that there is a significant difference between what M.D./D.C.'s call "medical acupuncture" and what licensed/board credentialed acupuncturists practice, which is acupuncture as part of an comprehensive, self-contained, proven 3,000 year old system of viewing health and the human body known as Traditional Chinese Medicine.
