H.R. 646, The Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act of 2009
Let’s talk about real healthcare reform.
When somebody asks what I think about the attempts at a healthcare reform, I usually respond that I don’t think of it as much of a reform. For all the talk going on, few in the mainstream seem to be talking much about what Americans are spending increasing amounts of money for—and that’s alternative medicine. Acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathy, chelation therapy, and so on accounted for several billion dollars of out-of-pocket expenses last year!
We can best increase patient numbers in alternative medicine clinics by legislation that makes it easier and more affordable for patients to be treated by an alternative medicine practitioner. One such measure in the United States is the recent unified legislative initiative of The American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine’s (AAAOM). The main thrust of this coordinated legislative initiative is to see passage of HR 646, the Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act of 2009. HR 646 amends title XVIII of the Social Security Act to provide coverage of qualified acupuncturist services under part B of the Medicare program and amends title 5, United States Code, to provide coverage for such services under the Federal Employees Benefits Program.
For over 30 years practitioners of acupuncture and Oriental medicine (AOM) have unassumingly changed the landscape of healthcare in the United States. In the last six years, AOM in the United States has grown by at least 50% to over 3 million users. If passed, HR 646 would immediately provide acupuncture benefits to over 54 million Americans.
More information, including updates on legislative activities can be found on the AAAOM website: www.aaaomonline.org
